The Telugu alphabet, letter by letter
Varnamala (వర్ణమాల) means “garland of letters” — the Telugu alphabet. Telugu is written in its own script, in which each letter stands for a sound. Learners usually start with the vowels (achulu) and consonants (hallulu), then learn how vowel signs attach to consonants to form new syllables.
Those consonant-plus-vowel combinations are called gunintalu (గుణింతాలు): క (ka) becomes కా (kā), కి (ki), కీ (kī) and so on. Once a child can read gunintalu and joined consonants (ottulu), they can sound out real Telugu words — the same way phonics works for English.
Aksharalu (అక్షరాలు)
The letters of the Telugu alphabet — vowels and consonants.
Achulu (అచ్చులు)
Vowels, such as అ (a), ఆ (ā), ఇ (i) and ఈ (ī).
Hallulu (హల్లులు)
Consonants, such as క (ka), చ (cha), ట (ṭa), త (ta) and ప (pa).
Gunintalu (గుణింతాలు)
A consonant combined with each vowel sign: క, కా, కి, కీ…
Ottulu (ఒత్తులు)
Joined consonant forms, as in అమ్మ (amma) and అన్న (anna).
Transliteration
Telugu written in English letters, such as “chiluka” for చిలుక (parrot) — a reading aid for beginners.

Varnamala (వర్ణమాల) means “garland of letters” — the name for the Telugu alphabet of vowels (achulu) and consonants (hallulu).
